Prenatal Development – Week 39 – What’s Happening This Week?

You are almost there! Your baby is about 21 inches (53.3cm) long and weighs about seven pounds. Your baby has probably reached their full length and weight by now, you can go into labor at any time. They have also fully developed their nails and hair, though their skull is still not completely fused. All that needs to be done is to wait for the big event.

What is happening inside is that the amniotic fluid is starting to turn milky. This is due to the shedding of the vernix caseosa. Let your doctor know if you have any discharge or leaking fluid. It is also very common for a woman to quickly develop high blood pressure around this time with all of the changes, and that’s certainly not good for baby or for mother.

You should pay attention to signs of labor, which are contractions that come at regular intervals without stopping, pink discharge, and backache.

Your baby cannot move freely anymore because there is not enough space inside your womb. You can breathe freely at this time because the uterus has dropped away from your diaphragm.

You may find you have a lot of pressure on your bladder, causing increased urination. You may also have a hard time sleeping.

This week you should make sure that everything is prepared for you to bring your baby home. Take good care of yourself; still, try to eat well, and as uncomfortable as you may feel, try to enjoy these last days of pregnancy. It may feel as though this part of the third trimester comes to you very quickly and then all of a sudden it seems to come to a screeching halt.

These last few weeks may pass by slowly but enjoy the connection with your baby in utero before their big arrival — which may be sooner than you think!
